C'est avec une grande peine que nous vous annonçons le décès de Raymond Alary, le 4 février 2026, à quelques jours de ses 85 ans, à l'hôpital Civic d'Ottawa. Né à Hearst, Ontario, le 10 février 1941, fils de Hélène Cloutier et Roger Alary.

Il laisse dans le deuil son épouse Huguette, sa fille Danielle, ses fils Alain, Gilles (Nathalie) et feu Yves; ses petits-enfants Gabriel (Stephanie), François, Rémi, David (Ceara), Véronique (Pierre-Luc), Vincent et ses arrière-petits-enfants Inika et Misha. Il laisse également ses frères Jean-Guy (Denise), feu Réjean (Murielle), Gaétan (Fernande), sa sœur Lucille (feu Bruno) et feu Gyslaine, ainsi que plusieurs beaux-frères et belles-sœurs, nièces et neveux, en plus de nombreux amis à qui il manquera à tout jamais.

Raymond était un homme avec une grande personnalité, un homme d'affaires infatigable, ambitieux et déterminé, et un fier Franco-Ontarien, car « ici, on parle français ».

Commençant sur le marché du travail à 16 ans, il fit l'acquisition d'Alary Transport de son père Roger avec l'aide de Réal Gosselin. Il travaillait aussi les soirs comme vendeur d'assurance, d'aspirateurs et de piscines afin de remplir ses obligations financières.

Ses frères Réjean, Jean-Guy ainsi que Gaétan, sa belle-sœur Rita et son beau-frère Bob, en plus de beaucoup de membres de la famille, ont travaillé avec ardeur à ses côtés. Il a réussi à faire grandir sa compagnie dans toute la province et à faire prospérer son commerce jusqu'à sa vente. On se souvient de ses débats à la Cour provincial de l'Ontario, qui lui ont permis d'obtenir sa licence PCV « A ». Celle-ci lui permettait désormais de transporter du cargo de toutes sortes dans le Nord-Est ontarien.

Après cette aventure, Raymond devint propriétaire du Panache, un magasin de vêtements pour hommes, du journal local Le Nord de Hearst et d'une agence de voyage, parce qu'il aimait voyager — et boy, qu'il en a fait des voyages!

Donnant beaucoup de son temps, il a siégé sur les conseils d'administration du club de ski de fond de Hearst, de La Maison Renaissance et du National Addiction Advisory Board. On se souviendra de lui pour son terme comme conseiller de ville à Hearst. Les fumeurs se souviendront surtout de lui pour son rôle dans l'interdiction légale de fumer dans les bâtiments publics à Hearst, et à quel point il n'aimait pas la cigarette. Il fut aussi membre des Chevaliers de Colomb durant plusieurs années.

Déménageant dans la région d'Ottawa au début des années 90, il fit l'acquisition d'un parc de roulottes à Rockland. Il se fit un nom pour être généreux et pour avoir une personnalité joviale et accueillante, ce qui lui a permis de se faire plusieurs amis.

Un bon père de famille et mari, il aimait beaucoup ses petits-enfants, pour qui il était toujours prêt à aider. Il était un bon vivant, farfelu et un raconteur d'histoires exceptionnelles. Il aimait rire et s'amuser et ne voulait jamais manquer une fête d'aucune sorte.

Devenu chauffeur personnel pour certains amis dans la région d'Ottawa, il aimait bien aller prendre un café et manger au restaurant avec eux et ses anciens amis de Hearst régulièrement. En dernier lieu, et non le moindre, il adorait les petits « road trips » et les rencontres pour souper avec maman, Lise et Edward, pour ensuite aller jouer aux cartes avec eux.

Il sera manqué de tous. Repose en paix.

En la mémoire de Raymond, une cérémonie avec le père Hervé Sauvé aura lieu aux Services funéraires Fournier, le vendredi 15 mai 2026, de 13 h à 16 h. Parents et amis sont invités à se joindre à la famille; tous sont les bienvenus.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Raymond Alary on February 4, 2026, a few days before his 85th birthday, at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa. Born in Hearst, Ontario, on February 10, 1941, he was the son of Hélène Cloutier and Roger Alary.

Beloved husband of Huguette, father of Danielle, Alain, Gilles (Nathalie), and the late Yves. Grandfather of Gabriel (Stephanie), François, Rémi, David (Ceara), Véronique (Pierre-Luc), and Vincent, and great-grandfather of Inika and Misha. Dear brother of Jean-Guy (Denise), the late Réjean (Murielle), Gaétan (Fernande), Lucille (late Bruno), and the late Gyslaine. He will be forever missed by his in-laws, nieces and nephews, as well as many friends.

Raymond was a man with a big personality, a tireless businessman, ambitious and determined, and a proud Franco-Ontarian, because “ici on parle français.”

Starting work at age 16, he acquired Alary Transport from his father Roger with the help of Réal Gosselin. He also worked evenings selling insurance, vacuum cleaners, and swimming pools to meet his financial obligations.

His brothers Réjean and Jean-Guy, as well as Gaétan, his sister-in-law Rita, his brother-in-law Bob, and many other family members worked hard alongside him. He succeeded in growing his company throughout the province and making his business prosper until it was sold. We remember his debates at the Ontario Provincial Court, which enabled him to obtain his PCV “A” license. This license allowed him to transport all kinds of cargo throughout Northeastern Ontario.

After this adventure, Raymond became the owner of Panache, a men’s clothing store, the local newspaper Le Nord de Hearst, and a travel agency, because he loved to travel—and boy, did he travel!

Giving much of his time, he served on the boards of directors of the Hearst Cross-Country Ski Club, La Maison Renaissance, and the National Addiction Advisory Board. He will be remembered for his term as a city councilor in Hearst. Smokers will remember him most for his role in the legal ban on smoking in public buildings in Hearst. He really didn’t like cigarettes, and everyone who knew him knew it. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus for many years.

Moving to the Ottawa area in the early 1990s, he purchased a trailer park in Rockland. He made a name for himself for being generous and having a cheerful and welcoming personality, which allowed him to make many friends.

A devoted father and husband, he loved his grandchildren dearly and was always ready to help them. He was a bon vivant, eccentric, and an exceptional storyteller. He loved to laugh and have fun and never wanted to miss a party of any kind. He became a personal driver for some friends in the Ottawa area and enjoyed going out for coffee and meals with them and his old friends from Hearst on a regular basis. Last but not least, he loved taking little road trips and meeting up for dinner with Mom, Lise, and Edward, and then playing cards with them.

He will be missed by all. Rest in peace.

In memory of Raymond, a ceremony with Father Hervé Sauvé will be held at Fournier Funeral Services on Friday, May 15, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family; all are welcome.
