Obituary of Garry Martin

It is with great sadness the family announces the death of Garry Martin at home, at the age of 73 years, after a hard-fought battle with cancer on Friday May 7^th, 2021.

Predeceased by his mother Berniece (Waugh) in 1979, father, Donald in 1990, brothers, Alvin in 1951, Edgar in 1961, Murdoch in 1989, Wilbert in 2009, niece Linda in 2007 and nephew Norman in 2014.  Survived by his sister Jean (Martin) Larocque, nephew Joey Martin and niece, Patricia Larocque all of Hearst, and nieces, Carol Guertin of Kapuskasing, Judy Martin of Timmins, and Helen Lacroix of Pointe Fortune, Qc., along with 3 more generations of nieces and nephews and many cousins across Canada.

Garry was well known in the community, he worked for many years for the MNR as a carpenter, and most notably for being the owner (aka The Candy Man) for 25 years, at M & L Food Store (le petit magasin Vert) in the new houses on 15^th street., and after selling the store he went on to be the bartender/custodian for the Royal Canadian Legion for 10 years.

Garry was also an avid Hockey player, he played Goal for many years on many teams,  including the MNR and OPP during the 2 ice tournaments. With the store he supported local hockey and baseball teams, and always loved to go watch them and the younger members of the family whenever they played. As a season ticket holder he could be seen hanging out with his friends at the Hearst Lumberjacks games.

Garry never complained, even on the bad days, he always had his quick wit, a smile and that well known eyebrow lift that he had for anything he thought was funny.  The family would like to thank the many doctors and nurses who helped Garry thru his fight, and especially for his PSW Bridgette and VON Nurse Caroline, who were there almost every day when he came home in February. We would like to make a special mention to Dr. Richard Claveau, Dr. Cano, and Dr. Bowen for your amazing care and compassion during his battle.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions there will be a celebration of life at a future date when family is able to travel from across Canada.

C'est avec une grande tristesse que la famille annonce le décès de Garry Martin chez lui, à l'âge de 73 ans, après une bataille acharnée contre le cancer, le vendredi 7 mai 2021.

Précédé dans la mort par sa mère Berniece (Waugh) en 1979, son père Donald en 1990, ses frères Alvin en 1951, Edgar en 1961, Murdoch en 1989, Wilbert en 2009, sa nièce Linda en 2007 et son neveu Norman en 2014. Survécut par sa sœur Jean (Martin ) Larocque, son neveu Joey Martin et sa nièce Patricia Larocque tous de Hearst, et ses nièces Carol Guertin de Kapuskasing, Judy Martin de Timmins et Helen Lacroix de Pointe Fortune, Qc., Ainsi que 3 autres générations de nièces et de neveux et de nombreux cousins, cousines ​​à travers le Canada.

Garry était bien connu dans la communauté, il a travaillé pendant de nombreuses années pour le MRN en tant que charpentier, et plus particulièrement le propriétaire (alias The Candy Man) pendant 25 ans, chez M&L Food Store (le petit magasin Vert) dans les maisons neuves de la 15e rue., et après avoir vendu le magasin, il est devenu le barman / concierge de la Légion royale canadienne pendant 10 ans.

Garry était aussi un joueur passionné de hockey, il a joué à Goal pendant de nombreuses années dans de nombreuses équipes dont le MRN et l'OPP lors du tournoi des deux glaces. Avec le magasin, il a soutenu des équipes locales de hockey et de baseball et a toujours aimé aller les regarder, ainsi que les plus jeunes membres de la famille, chaque fois qu'ils jouaient. En tant que détenteur d'un abonnement de saison, on pouvait le voir avec ses amis aux joutes des Lumberjacks de Hearst.

Garry ne s'est jamais plaint, même les mauvais jours, il avait toujours son esprit vif, un sourire et ce levage des sourcils bien connu qu'il avait pour tout ce qu'il trouvait drôle.

La famille tient à remercier les nombreux médecins et infirmières qui ont aidé Garry dans son combat, et en particulier pour sa PSW, Bridgette et son Infirmière de  VON, Caroline qui étaient là presque tous les jours quand il est rentré à la maison en février.

Nous aimerions faire une mention spéciale au Dr Richard Claveau, au Dr Cano et au Dr Bowen pour vos soins et votre compassion incroyables pendant son combat.

En raison des restrictions de Covid-19, il y aura une célébration de la vie à une date ultérieure lorsque la famille pourra voyager de partout au Canada.
