Obituary of Anja Turuba
Anja Unelma (Höök) Turuba passed away peacefully on July 13, 2022, at the age of 91. She was surrounded by all of her children and grandchildren who love her very much. She was the eldest of 5 children, Hilka, Margaret, Veikko, and Helen, daughter of Jenny and John Höök. Anja met Fred Turuba in Mosher, Ontario, in the spring of 1954. Sparks flew and they married 6-months later on November 27th.
Her fondest memories were raising her 4 children, Diane, Steve, Nancy, and Dave, and her 4 grandchildren, Nathan, James, Roxanne, and Michael. This involved many summers camping and fishing at Nagagamisis and Fushimi Provincial Park, family trips, baking cookies, pies, cinnamon buns, perogies, and her famous doughnuts with and for her family, and playing bingo on Saturday mornings.
In her spare time, Anja liked to bake, knit, and crochet and loved donating her projects to worthy causes, such as St. Paul’s United Church, the Royal Canadian Legion, and various women’s shelters. She was also known for her veracious book obsession, particularly for true stories, and even wrote and submitted her own articles to Woman’s World and True Story Magazine. She enjoyed having coffee with family and friends, especially her lifelong friend Sivi Maki, and spent many afternoons watching the finches, butterflies, and begonias in the backyard. Anja also loved bluesy country music and listening to her sister Margaret playing the accordion during family parties. She was the last surviving member of her family and looked forward to reuniting with them in their heavenly home. She will be dearly missed by family, friends, and all those who knew her.
Family and friends are welcomed for a service that will be held on Friday, July 15th, 2022 at 10 A.M. at the Riverside Cemetery in Hearst.
