Obituary of Gaétan Garneau

Gaétan Charles Garneau (1934-2024)

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of Gaétan (Gates) Charles Garneau. Gaétan passed peacefully with family by his side on the evening of September 7^th, 2024, at the age of 90 years old.  Gaétan was our beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend.

Gaétan leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughter Monique (Richard) Noel; grandson Daniel (Lorena) Garneau; granddaughters Nathalie (Kevyn) Boisvert; Crystal (Brad) Burns and 4 great grandchildren. 

Gaétan was predeceased by his father Fedor; son Joseph; daughter Rejeanne; mother Aurore; sister Alfreda and partner Dolores (Dolly).

Gaétan was born in Hearst, Ontario on April 12,1934 to Fedor and Aurore (Larocque) Garneau. Over his lifetime, he held different occupations including driving taxi, mining, farming, logging, butcher, long haul truck driver, and chainsaw repairman. Gaétan also had his own business, Gates’ Meat Market in Beardmore, Ontario, before moving and settling in Pine River, Manitoba. 

Gaétan was often found at auction sales, buying old vehicles through great deals and repairing them, often boasting how proud he was of his Ford vehicles. He found joy in simple pleasures such as blueberry picking and sitting in a boat and spending the day fishing. Loving the outdoors, he would often be outside most of the day.  Always the chatterbox, he loved to spark conversations with anyone and everyone, including strangers along his travels. He often could be found lending a helping hand to his friends and members of the community.  Gaétan was a fan of hockey and wrestling; he enjoyed sharing his love of both sports with his grandkids, and was a faithful Montreal Canadiens fan his whole life.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Hearst, Ontario at a later date – details to follow in the near future and will be shared with family and friends.

Gaétan Charles Garneau (1934-2024)

C'est avec le cœur lourd et une grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de Gaétan (Gates) Charles Garneau. Gaétan est décédé paisiblement avec sa famille à ses côtés dans la soirée du 7 septembre 2024, à l'âge de 90 ans.  Gaétan était notre père, grand-père, arrière-grand-père, oncle et ami bien-aimé.

Gaétan laisse dans le deuil sa fille Monique (Richard) Noel ; son petit-fils Daniel (Lorena) Garneau ; ses petites-filles Nathalie (Kevyn) Boisvert ; Crystal (Brad) Burns et 4 arrière-petits-enfants. 

Gaétan a été précédé par son père Fedor; son fils Joseph ; sa fille Réjeanne ; sa mère Aurore ; sa soeur Alfreda et sa partenaire Dolores (Dolly).

Gaétan est né à Hearst, en Ontario, le 12 avril 1934, de Fedor et Aurore (Larocque) Garneau. Au cours de sa vie, il a exercé différents métiers : chauffeur de taxi, mineur, agriculteur, bûcheron, boucher, conducteur de grand routier et réparateur de tronçonneuses. Gaétan a également eu son propre commerce, Gates' Meat Market, à Beardmore, en Ontario, avant de déménager et de s'installer à Pine River, au Manitoba. 

On trouvait souvent Gaétan dans les ventes aux enchères, achetant de vieux véhicules à des conditions avantageuses et les réparant, se vantant souvent de la fierté qu'il éprouvait à l'égard de ses véhicules Ford. Il trouvait de la joie dans les plaisirs simples, comme la cueillette des myrtilles ou la pêche en bateau. Aimant le plein air, il passait souvent la majeure partie de la journée à l'extérieur.  Toujours bavard, il aimait engager la conversation avec tout le monde, y compris avec les étrangers qui se trouvaient sur son chemin. On le trouvait souvent en train de donner un coup de main à ses amis et aux membres de la communauté.  Gaétan était un fan de hockey et de lutte ; il aimait partager sa passion pour ces deux sports avec ses petits-enfants, et il a été toute sa vie un fidèle supporter des Canadiens de Montréal.

Une célébration de la vie aura lieu à Hearst, en Ontario, à une date ultérieure - les détails suivront dans un proche avenir et seront partagés avec la famille et les amis.
